The Fear & Greed Index compresses volatility, momentum, market breadth and sentiment data into a number between 0 and 100. Low readings mean fear, high readings mean euphoria.
Important: the index does not tell you what happens tomorrow. It only tells you how emotional the market is right now — and that is often useful on its own.
When everyone is nervous, risk often gets overpriced. When everyone is euphoric, risk tends to be underpriced. That makes sentiment most useful as a counterweight.
In practice: extreme fear does not automatically make a setup safe. Extreme greed does not automatically make a coin shortable. Historically, both extremes mainly marked phases in which sentiment sat unusually far from its average.
