Polygon runs a dual strategy: the proven PoS sidechain (cheap, fast, large DeFi ecosystem) and the newer zkEVM solution (zero-knowledge proofs for real Ethereum security). The AggLayer aims to connect both worlds long-term — ambitious but still in progress.
From MATIC to POL
The token was rebranded from MATIC to POL — part of repositioning as multi-chain infrastructure. POL is used for staking, gas and governance.
Competition from All Sides
Polygon competes with Arbitrum and Optimism on rollups, Solana and BNB on cheap transactions, and Ethereum itself (post-Dencun). The dual strategy is both strength and risk: spreading focus across too many fronts can dilute resources.
