DePIN — When Crypto Meets Real Hardware
DePIN stands for Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks. The idea: instead of one company building and running a network, thousands of participants do it — motivated by token rewards. Helium for wireless, Filecoin for storage, Render for GPU computing. Hardware plus crypto incentives.
The Business Model
DePIN projects pay participants with tokens for operating hardware. This can work — but only if real demand for the service exists. Helium's story is instructive: hundreds of thousands of hotspots deployed, but actual network usage fell far short of expectations. Token incentives can bootstrap infrastructure but can't force demand.
Opportunity and Risk
DePIN is one of the most compelling narratives — crypto with real physical utility. But most projects are early, unit economics unclear, and dependence on token prices for viability makes the whole thing fragile. When token price drops, hardware isn't worth running — and the network shrinks. Circular but real.
