Cosmos — The Internet of Blockchains
Cosmos pursues a radically different philosophy: instead of cramming all applications onto one chain, each project runs its own blockchain. They're connected through IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication) — a protocol that transfers tokens and data between Cosmos chains. The result: sovereign app-chains that can still communicate.
App-Chains — Freedom at a Price
Running your own chain gives maximum control: custom fees, custom consensus, custom validator sets. Osmosis, dYdX, Celestia — all chose the Cosmos path. The price: each chain needs its own security. Without enough validators or staking volume, you're more vulnerable than an L2 on Ethereum.
ATOM — The Eternal Value Question
ATOM is the Cosmos Hub token — but not every Cosmos chain needs ATOM. That's the core problem: the ecosystem can grow without ATOM benefiting proportionally. Interchain Security aims to fix this, but adoption has been slow. Buying ATOM is betting the Hub stays relevant — not just the ecosystem.
